Helpful Rental Tips & Info

Golf carts are one of the best ways on wheels to travel within Ocracoke Village. Please remember to drive slowly and keep your golf cart within the village. The village-wide speed limit is 20 mph. Be sure to follow all NC driving laws because these also apply to golf carts. Please drive and ride as cautiously as you would in a car. Please park where parking is welcome. Thank you!

DO I NEED A LICENSE TO RENT A GOLF CART?

Golf cart renters and drivers must hold a valid driver’s license, have insurance, and are responsible for following all North Carolina motor vehicle driving laws. Primary renters must be 23 or older and licensed. Drivers must be 18 or older and licensed.

At the time of renting, a rental agreement is completed. The operation of the golf cart, policies, and safe driving practices are reviewed. We are open daily and available to answer questions and offer assistance as needed. Failure to comply with safe driving practices & OIGC policies may result in termination of the rental with no refund.

HOW DO I CHARGE MY GOLF CART?

We will review the steps for recharging your cart if you are renting overnight, for multiple days, or weekly. We encourage recharging whenever the cart is not in use. Please recharge the cart each night, overnight. Simply plug in the cart to a standard outlet and confirm the cart is charging. We require carts to be fully charged at the end of a multi-day and weekly rental. Please contact us with any charging concerns, so we can help to resolve any issues right away. 

IS DELIVERY AVAILABLE FOR WEEKLY RENTALS?

Yes, complimentary cart delivery and pick-up are provided with weekly rentals at almost all island locations. With an advance reservation, your cart will be delivered to your lodging location on your rental start date and picked up (after 9 am) on your rental end date. For a shorter-term golf cart rental, please visit our office to process the rental and pick up your golf cart.

CAN I RESERVE GOLF CARTS IN ADVANCE OR FOR A SPECIAL EVENT?

Yes. We recommend reserving well in advance for rentals during summer, for weddings, holidays, and for other special events. Reserve one cart or many from our website or by calling our rental office.

CAN I RENT A GOLF CART FOR A DAY-TRIP VISIT TO OCRACOKE ISLAND?

If you are planning a day-trip visit to the island, we offer hourly rentals on a walk-in basis (no reservations). We offer 4-passenger & 6-passenger golf carts. Our hourly rentals begin at 2 hours and additional hours are available. For hourly rentals, please stop by our rental office to rent or call us once you are on the island. We are a 15-20 minute drive from the ferry landing at the north end of Ocracoke. Drive through the Village to nearly the end of the road. Our rental office will be on your left, along the harbor and across from the Anchorage Inn. 

HOW DO I RENT A GOLF CART FOR A LONGER STAY ON THE ISLAND?

If you are planning a multi-day or weekly stay in the future, easily reserve a cart in advance online here or by calling our rental office. If you are interested in a rental for today or tomorrow, please visit or call our rental office for more information.

WHERE ARE GOLF CARTS PERMITTED ON OCRACOKE ISLAND? 

Golf carts may be driven on roads within the historic Village of Ocracoke. Please drive, ride, park, and signal as safely as you would operate any motor vehicle. Parking is permitted in standard parking spaces, just as you would park any motor vehicle. Please take it slowly throughout the Village. Please drive very slowly in residential areas, on side roads, and if you visit Howard Street.

WHERE ARE GOLF CARTS NOT PERMITTED ON OCRACOKE ISLAND?

Golf carts are not permitted outside of Ocracoke Village, to the beach, the airstrip, on Southpoint Road, or to the NPS Campground or Pony Pens. Golf carts are not permitted on sidewalks, in the bike lane, or on walking paths. Golf carts are not permitted in the community cemetery or at Springer’s Point. 

WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS FOR CHILDREN?

Children must be secured with a safety/seat belt and seated in their own space at all times. Young children must be secured in an age-appropriate child safety seat according to NC motor driving laws (no booster seats). Child seats are available from our rental office, free of charge, or you can attach your own seat securely to the cart. Sitting in laps or standing on the cart is not permitted. Children may not operate golf carts.

WHAT KINDS OF FEATURES DO YOUR GOLF CARTS HAVE?

Electric carts are an excellent choice for use for travel within Ocracoke Village. All of our golf carts are equipped with lights for night driving, windshields, and seat/lap belts. Our fleet of 4-passenger & 6-passenger golf carts are all newer or rebuilt since Hurricane Dorian and easy to drive. Many of the carts have cup holders and rear seats with wrap-around safety restraint kits. For longer-term rentals, chargers and extension cords are also provided for easy recharging. 

WHICH CART IS BEST FOR OUR GROUP?

The 4-passenger carts are for 1-4 passengers. The 6-passenger carts are for 1-6 passengers and also have a full roof over all of the seats. Each passenger will need to be in their own seat. Child safety seats are required by law for young children and do take up the space of one passenger. Dogs are welcome and most breeds take up the space of one passenger. 

CAN I PARK AT THE SHOP IF I’M PICKING UP MY GOLF CART?

Yes. There is a large public parking area a few hundred yards from our rental office. We are conveniently located along Silver Lake Harbor and across from the Anchorage Inn. The large parking area is just past our office, off of Water Plant Road. The parking area is near public restrooms and the Ocracoke Preservation Museum.

HOW AM I RESPONSIBLE FOR MY GOLF CART?

The responsibility is the same as for a rental car or any other rental item. The registered renter is fully responsible for any citations received, damages, or neglect of the golf cart during the rental. Charges may apply. Please report any damages or concerns to our rental office.

Please visit or call us. We are available and want to help you to make the most of your visit to Ocracoke. We open daily at 8 am. During our peak season, our extended hours are 8 am-8 pm daily.
